Spraygraphic Interview with Artist Amanda Lynn

Spraygraphic interview with Amanda Lynn

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

AL: Well, I am a painter. I love to paint, so that is what I do, in as many different applications as I can figure out.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

AL: I live just outside of San Francisco and my day job is at a motorcycle and sculpture restoration/paint shop, Underground Colors, in San Francisco. I constantly have other projects around the Bay Area that I work on as well.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

AL: A lot! I use mostly acrylic when doing my fine art and mural work. At the shop, we use an array of different mediums and substrates. Working with these types of automotive paints and repair substances has given me the knowledge to use in creating some of my sculpture work as well. Ranging anywhere from fiberglass resin to poly urethane catalyzed paint, to gold leaf and bondo.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

AL: Well usually I obsess over what I want to do in my head for a good week or so while I am at work, or daydreaming while I am commuting. By the time I am actually beginning a new piece, I pretty much have a good idea about how I am going to attack it. With my paintings I start with a pretty defined sketch before applying the drawing to what ever surface that I am going to paint, then just go at it until I feel like it is right. On the street, I usually just scope out my space and do a quick charcoal sketch on the wall, then rely mostly on my painting to figure things out.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

AL: I don’t usually have a hard time coming up with something to paint, I have a million ideas that I have yet to do. Lately I have been writing some of my ideas down, so that if the time comes that I can’t think of anything, I will have a list. Sometimes, however, those ideas don’t work out the way I imagined, so I usually fight with them for a day or so, before walking away and then coming back the next day to try again.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

AL: All around me, from books and magazines, to women I see on the street and especially from my talented artist friends.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

AL: My paintings have been seen in mostly galleries in San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA but also in New York City, NY, PA, Tampa, FL, Denver, CO, Atlanta, GA; Montreal, Canada , Melbourne, Australia , and on The Seventh Letter’s, Letters First traveling show in Tokyo, Taipei and Barcelona.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

AL: Well, that is a question I am constantly searching to answer. As of now I have a few shows lined up in San Francisco over the course of the upcoming year, but I hope to line up a few more.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

AL: Fortunately, I am actually working on a project that really satisfies my idea of a dream art assignment. That being, painting a freelance commission mural, where I get to paint something of my own subject matter and style for a very accommodating client. I generally don’t like to be assigned a painting to work on, as my free night time painting sessions are a very personal thing, however, I have had some fun portrait commissions.

SG: What is your favorite color?

AL: Blue, but I am very drawn to Green.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

AL: Wow, that is probably the hardest question yet….I have favorites in so many different styles. My biggest inspiration in life has been, Robin Grass. He is a prolific painter and teacher that I was fortunate enough to study under as a child, and recently did a dual show with called Wicked.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

AL: Usually I read through this month’s Juxtapoz and am working on a series of vampire books also. I look through a lot of art books as well.

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

AL: Only when I had to in school and I don’t know where any of them are because I put most of my old school paintings and drawings out on the streets of SF, and they were gone within 20 mins.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

AL: The redwood forests in Northern California.

SG: Any final words of advice?

AL: Keep creating, someone is always watching, waiting, wanting, and ready to be inspired.
