Spraygraphic Interview with Kristen Wright

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

KW: I am a photographer. I like sandwiches, beer and zombie movies.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

KW: Right now, (March) I’m on tour with No Use for a Name , NOFX , American Steel and The Flatliners .. I’m in Houston on right now as a part of the US leg. Then we’re off to Europe, New Zealand and Australia in April. You know, just livin the dream.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

KW: I shoot film, with a camera.

SG: What kind of equipment do you use?

KW: Mostly a hassleblad .. but I have been shooting a lot with this metallic gold holga . I put a gold chain on it. It’s so tacky, I love it.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

KW: Don’t really have one.. in the best circumstances I get inspired by someone or something, and I get an image in my head. If I can duplicate that, I’m doing well.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

KW: Move.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

KW: The road, the incredible people I’m meeting along the way.

SG: Can you tell us a little about your show, International Exit?

KW: It’s a collection of images from my time living abroad. It’s a lot different than my other works.. a lot of photojournalistic stuff, which is completely new to me. It was so easy to find inspiration there, it made it impossible not to grow a lot as a photographer and a person. This show is a collection of thirteen 40" gallery wrapped canvas giclee prints. It’s currently showing at Switchblade Salon .

SG: What do you look for when you are picking models to work with? Is it a physical feature? Personality? Photogenic? etc…

KW: It’s all about inspiration for me. My favorite models are people that interest me.. usually normal people not technically "models". Personality is key. I look for something deeper than the industry standards of "good model". I guess it’s just a feeling I get when I see someone.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

KW: Most recently, I shot the march issue of JAVA with some incredibly talented people. The models were airbrushed… The shoot turned out so beautifully vibrant and sexy.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

KW: One with an unlimited budget.

SG: What is your favorite color?

KW: Right now it’s teal. I also enjoy orange.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

KW: I take my inspiration from things close to me. My dad shot a bunch of slides when I was little. They still amaze me. He
doesn’t think they’re half as amazing as I do.. and that completely blows my mind. I think the best artists don’t even realize that’s what they are.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

KW: I’m a whore for gossip mags.

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

KW: I shoot one every once in awhile. I know exactly what I want, so a lot of the time the best model is myself. I shot a self portrait every day I lived in Prague, maybe I’ll show it someday.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

KW: Anywhere my friends are.

SG: Any final words of advice?

KW: Wipe front to back, travel, and never forget about your friends.
