The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is pleased to announce that artist Will Cotton is the first featured speaker in the 2010/11 ArtTalks series, to be held at Christie’s on Tuesday, September 21, at 6:30 p.m. ArtTalks, the AFA’s lecture series, features notable figures in the art world. Following Cotton’s lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception hosted by Christie’s.

Spraygraphic Interview with Photographer Jessica Hans

SG: Please tell us about yourself. Where do you currently live and work?

JH: I’m currently living and working in Baltimore, MD.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

JH: I’ve been focusing predominately on weaving in the past two years but I shoot analog photographs on a daily basis. I’ve recently become more and more involved in ceramics. Anything to do with my hands.

SG: What kind of equipment do you use?

JH: I switch cameras back and forth. I shot Minolta for a long, long time; an X370 and then an SRT200 but have recently switched to a Canon AE1. I have a small collection of older rangefinders that I play with sometimes too; a Minolta AL and a Yashica Electro.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something or simply uninspired?

JH: I switch to other mediums. I usually go from shooting photos for a month or two to weaving for a month or two then back again. Right now I’m onto ceramics. It changes all the time. I find that I’m able to work out my frustrations with photography by doing something very manual and tactile like ceramics.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

JH: Rocks, cacti / succulents

SG: What do you look for when you are picking models/subjects to work with? Is it a physical feature? Personality? Photogenic? etc…

JH: I don’t like taking photos of people unless it’s of the backs of their heads.

SG: Do you bring your camera with you everywhere with you or do you leave it home when you go out on the town?

JH: I take my camera with me when I go on hikes, but otherwise I leave it home most of the time.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

JH: Most recently I had some pieces in “No Promo” at Reference Gallery in Richmond, VA and “I Don’t Believe in Miracles” at SpaceWomb Gallery in Long Island City, NY

SG: Where will it be seen next?

JH: I have a selection of woven pieces up for sale at Cheaper Show in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 26th. I am also releasing two zines in the beginning of July; my ‘Felsgarten’ series (http://www.jessicahans.com/felsgarten/main.html) and a collaborative project between myself and Kaj Lehmann called ‘Paris und Wald’ (http://www.jessicahans.com/parisundwald.html) documenting a period of time that we spent together.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

JH: Travel photo journalist for Swiss Zeitung

SG: What is your favorite color?

JH: White

SG: Who is your favorite photographer? And Why?

JH: I like a lot of photographers. I never get tired of Ali Bosworth but I think that’s because I never get tired of pictures of cats.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

JH: Bram Stoker’s Dracula

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

JH: Swimming holes, in the woods
