In the interim for the resurrection of the systems, ideologies and morals of the American identity there is a call for the reimaining of the American Artist. There is a job description that has never been written without compromising the title of “Artist” to human resource scrutiny. There is a void in society that is echoed in every state, city, and community. Some artists have strayed under the risk of poverty and others have developed careers out of their fine art degrees for the greater consumer good of the American dream.

There are bands of Artists whose calling have gone unredeemed by the lack of opportunity to contribute to culture without a marketable appeal. Artist in small towns as in big cities have been lead to interrogate the nature of their visions and contributions in the absence of a corporate title or a barista’s apron.

Today from the echoes of burst bubbles there is a call of arms to the American Artist. There is corner office vacant for the cultural engineers to build bridges from the media hype to the reality of communities depraved of meaning. There are men in ties sobering from their high who’s killer instincts need to be tamed to build a new foundation in the forth dimension. The Artist is a preordained leader with the qualifications of vision and the skill set to execute the collective dream that is being drafted from the round tables of occupied cities. There is no deadline, submissions are always accepted, but the need is abundant, we are looking for Artist to lead the way to rebuild this fatherless county.

23rd Key takes out the Australian Stencil Art Prize with Roller Derby portrait.

Melbourne artist 23rd Key has won the 2011 Australian Stencil Art Prize with her detailed stencil ‘Game Face’, winning a $2000 cash prize.

23rd Key’s winning work will exhibit alongside 45 other finalist artworks in the Australian Stencil Art Prize Exhibition from the 4 November - 11 December on Cockatoo Island. The Exhibition forms part of the Outpost Project program of events. Outpost Project is a 5 week long urban arts festiva, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

“We were delighted to be invited to participate in the Outpost Project” says Jacinta Walpole. Director of the Australian Stencil Art Prize. “The level of exposure that Outpost Project offers our finalists is unprecedented.” All artworks, excluding the winning artwork, are for sale via the website www.australianstencilartprize.com.

The winning stencil is based on a photo taken by Jesse ‘Manuel Exposure’ Booher at the Great Southern Slam (Roller Derby) tournament in 2010. The portrait features one of the Victorian Roller Derby Leagues fiercest jammers, Kittie Von Krusher.

Kittie has ‘by far the most intimidating game face you’ll ever see’, says 23rd Key who is also a roller derby player.

23rd Key began her foray into stencil art in 2005, and has spent most of her time bent over a table cutting stencils ever since. With a background in printmaking and audio engineering, she is now in her second year of a graphic design degree, and is working to further develop her photo-realistic style. 23rd Key takes no short cuts, spending up to 6 months on any one piece. She hand carves each doily-like layer, and her attention to detail is fast becoming a trademark of her work.

The 2011 judging panel consisted of internationally acclaimed graffiti artist Phibs (Melbourne Sydney), Tugi from Mays Lane Project (Sydney) and Edwina Corlette from Edwina Corlette Gallery (Brisbane).

23rd Key was a finalist in 2010 and 2009, with her work featuring on 20,000 postcards nationally in 2009 in a special prize sponsored by Avant Card.

Upper Space is a non-profit street art organisation that is comprised of artists; academics; activists and community organisers. We directly support street artist’s practices whilst representing a selection of non-commercial public realm artists that engage with spacial, social and environmental justice issues within the UK and abroad.

Our main motivation is focussed on promoting alternative ideas and perceptions of public space at a time when its democracy is highly contested. Proceeds from sales of work on our site go directly to support artist’s practices and with each artist nominating a charity; direct action group or social project as a beneficiary of sales, we can ensure that money gets to where it is needed.

Love to disobey. Disobey to Love.

In 2011 the British government brought in devastating cuts to public spending in response to the financial deficit caused by a deeply flawed and unsustainable financial system. As is always the case, the marginalised and poorest citizens of the nation now feel the full force of these changes. Upper Space worked alongside young homeless people in the city of Manchester – the UK’s fourth most deprived city, in the creation of street art interventions that critically engaged with the governments changes to the housing benefit system and Localism Bill whilst creatively giving the finger to those responsible.

The project saw Upper Space artists working alongside young homeless people in the city on a series of urban interventions and installations across the city. The bus shelter interventions turned ordinary public spaces into temporary homes as Upper Space highlights the effects of the financial crisis on citizens with particular focus on the banks that have caused the crisis. These same banks are now repossessing up to 900 family homes each week as people struggle to repay mortgages that were irresponsibly sold.

The project also saw artists installing customised bird boxes across the city on lamp posts that communicated the main facts from the project to passers by.

‘Home’ Screen Print Editions:
