Spraygraphic Apparel Interview with Angela Riccobono aka Cherry Bombin

SG: Tell us a little about yourself.

CB: Well, hmmmm….I look like every stereotype your mom told you about, but have a heart of gold!

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

CB: I work and live in phoenix, AZ and do both of those in the same place. In other words my studio is at my house currently, till I get a big business loan and have a mini sweat shop. Don’t stereotype me!

SG: What mediums do you work with?

CB: I use recycled rubber…used rubber bicycle tubes, to be exact. Also, I include vintage and one of a kind fabric textiles on many of my products.

SG: Why did you choose to work with bike tubes and other recycled materials?

CB: Qhy not??!? …………………………………. okay, fine…well, besides being super crafty and wanting to live and sustain independently through art with a purpose, I am passionate about environmentalism, vegetarianism, and minimizing consumption! Raising consciousness regarding these 3 huge topics, I feel is important because, there so many problems facing every community within this country and world that are directly linked to these 3 topics. Also, intuitively and through his/herstory teachings, destruction will re-occur unless people get pro-active and start questioning reality regarding the existence of their lives and everything they consume and waste, repeatedly!

SG: Are your chosen materials hard to work with?

CB: It’s not that they were ever hard to work with, but challenging and more of a learning process. When I started sewing the rubber, I did it by hand and needed some extra tools, like thimbles and patience n such. My sewing machine is a dream doll, I tell ya, now.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work?

CB: Well it is long and vigorous work. There are seriously so many steps: starting with locating a bike shop that won’t be “inconvenienced” or “hassled” by having an extra trash used for recycling, to collecting and washing/drying, then cutting all the tubes open and piecing them together.

SG: What’s your Studio like?

CB: It is like having an orgie, mostly women and then some men watching on the side. It’s typically open day and night, so if you would like to see for yourself or order some custom items, give me a call then stop on by, clothing optional. What are some of your inspirations influencing your work? Oh gees!!! …my number one is Jesika Jordan (a.k.a MoshaOne), the one and only amazing person who inspired me to follow my dreams! she inspires me to live, grow, work, create, breath! My existence depended on her and she is the most supportive, influential and creative inspiration in my life!! Friends are also a huge inspiration! They are real; they are truth! Other significant inspirations are unfortunately: watching the earth wither away oh so slowly: experiencing the massive amounts of consumption (internally and externally) and waste everywhere, all of the time: noticing the unconsciousness of the majority as they eat, drink, drive, work, etc. like programed robots, who don’t think even once about their actions and how it effects, not them necessarily, but others and generations younger. This is what gives me the passion and drive to contribute, creative arts and voice with a mother fuckin’ purpose!!

SG: How did you come up with the name Cherry Bombin?

CB: It’s kinda sassy and revolutionary at the same time, just like me!

SG: Does it have a secret meaning?

CB: It’s not much of a secret, nothing is to me though! I am not scared of questions……..Cherry Bombin’ wear:: Standing head up! Letting our voices be heard together and using any necessary action or force to defend our constitutional rights; rising up to bring positive change to our society and to revolutionize. We need to come together; we are the change of the future!!

SG: Where has your work been seen?

CB: I am a part owner of the COLAB (collectively operated local artist boutique), in downtown phoenix. You can see & purchase my stuff there, at the Trunk Trading co., phoenix, mint vintage, phoenix, and Evocal in Costa Mesa, CA

SG: Where will it be seen next?

CB: New York city!!

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

CB: hmmm…. def. a collaboration with Anna Sui

SG: What is your favorite color?

CB: ALL colors, aqua-sea foam lately

SG: What book/magazines are you reading this week?

CB: Women and Socialism, by Sharon Smith

SG: Ever do self portrait? Where is it now?

CB: Are you stoned? My products don’t look like me, but wait maybe they do????

SG: So let us end with your favorite place to hang.

CB: Well, my studio of course. hehe…

I have this wallet that Angela gave me 3 years ago. It is remarkable. It is water resistant and is really cool looking. I have seen some of her new items and will be purchasing many more when I have a minute to order from Cherry Bombin wear.
