SPRAYGRAPHIC INTERVIEW WITH ILLUSTRATOR JUDIT GARCIA-TALAVERA
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
JGT: I am an illustrator from Barcelona, Spain.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
JGT: Live and work in Barcelona.
SG: What mediums do you work with?
JGT: Normally I work with ink, watercolors, pilot and digital.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
JGT: First I start drawing with pilot pen and ink, on the other hand I work the color, I usually use watercolor, color ink and felt-tip pens, ..then I pass to the computer the artworks to work the image digitally.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
JGT: I go to swim because this allows me to focus and concentrate better.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
JGT: My inspiration generally comes from different sources, fashion magazines, internet (blogs, flickr, myspace) , flea markets, fashion photography, music, old movies… I try to get inspiration from my daily life.
SG: How did you get into being an freelance artist/designer for companies?
JGT: I grew up in Tenerife, a volcanic little island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. When I began study art I realized how far I felt from the rest of the world and the few possibilities that I had to become an illustrator if I stayed in the island where the options are limited. That was the reason that made me move to Barcelona with my portfolio.
SG: What kind of deadlines do you work with when producing this kind of work?
JGT: Normally, the deadlines are really tight and the magazines wants the work for yesterday, so I have to get the jobs done in little time.
SG: Do the companies come back to you and say “change this” or “change that?”
JGT: It depends on whom I am working with but doing small modifications after the work is submitted is just normal.
SG: How much are you willing to change? Is there some kind of negotiation process you go through?
JGT: I am always willing to chance as long as it continuous being of my style.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
JGT: My work has been seen in several magazines like for example in Spain Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone among others, on fashion blogs like Trendycrew and I have also collaborated with fashion brands like Nina Ricci perfumes.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
JGT: Now I am collaborating with Elle Girl Japan and I hope to get my work future in more places.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
JGT: I can’t pick just one, collaborating with a fashion designer or I would love to work designing the packaging of a cosmetics line.
SG: What is your favorite color?
JGT: I like all the colors but I have a special predilection for black and blue.
SG: Who is your favorite artist or designer? And Why?
JGT: Every day I see wonderful works from people on the internet, but I think my favorite artist are the Impressionist.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
JGT: I have never done a self portrait, I am more interesting in people than myself.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
JGT: Rebeca by Daphne du Maurier
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
JGT: I live in a wonderful city with an amazing weather so any place in Barcelona with friends are perfect options to hang out.
SG: Any final words of advice?
JGT: Peace
