Spraygraphic Interview with Photographer Massimo Gammacurta

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

MG: I am a conceptual still life photographer Massimo Gammacurta. I was born in Rome, Italy and studied photography at Cine TV Roberto Rossellini’s school. I am influenced by the Futurist art movement, the Graffiti culture and Fellini’s and Pasolini movies. I have shot stills and portraits for a host of publications and advertising such as Details, Forbes , Style Montecarlo, XXL, Nike, Lexus, Wieden&Kennedy, Surface Magazine, Esquire UK. In November 2007 I was nominated one of the winners of the Surface magazine Avant Guardian 10th annual award. I also won PX3 in Paris public choice awards, 1st and 2nd place in Still Life at The International Color awards, American Photography AP-24 2008, IPA photo awards 1st and 2nd place in still life, 2 silver awards at the Creativity Awards category photography/magazine, 1st place at PDN Pix digital in beauty fashion, and also has been included in the Luerzers archive 200 best advertising photographer and awarded Merit in the 44th Annual SPD (Society of Publishers Designers) in the category Trade/Corporate Photography and in the 2009 Creative Review photography annual.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

MG: New York

SG: What mediums do you work with?

MG: Photography and sculpture

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

MG: In my fine art work I am motivated by challenging my viewer, to make them think and exclaim, “Wow, I never thought to look at this subject or that in such a way”. I would like to see my viewer changed, and have their vision altered for life’.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

MG: Running, I find myself really thinking about ideas when I run.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

MG: Anywhere, from museums to watching TV to reading a book.

SG: What kind of deadlines do you work with when producing this commercial work?

MG:I am a commercial photographer too so when i do commercial work the deadline is pretty much 1 to 3 days for deliver the job. As far as personal work I also try to set my own deadlines…I don’t like to wait too long.

SG: Do the companies come back to you and say “change this” or “change that?”

MG: Sometimes we make minor changes but most of the times this process is done while we are shooting.

SG: How much are you willing to change? Is there some kind of negotiation process you go through?

MG: It depends what I am shooting, I am pretty flexible and open minded and I always listen to any ideas that are thrown at me.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

MG: Magazines and exhibitions, books and the net….the internet made me a bit popular.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

MG: Well, aside from my commercial assignments, I am working on a book and a solo show featuring a large collection of photograph of hardball candy sculptures called Lolli-POP

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

MG: I would like to publish this book and do this Lolli-Pop show.

SG: What is your favorite color

MG: Absence of color…I like black.

SG: Who is your favorite artist or designer? And Why?

MG: So many but I love Francis Bacon…he is unique, there has been and will always be just one Francis Bacon

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

MG: Never

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

MG: NYT Style magazine.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

MG: NYC, so much energy in the City.

SG: Any final words of advice?

MG: Just be yourself, be original, and be prepared.
