The most important thing in my experience is the idea of Skecth. and human anatomy. Because I spend a lot of time to study the human bones and muscle. Now I still read again and again when I am painting…and sometimes I still find some mistakes when I finish work, but in that moment I didn’t find it…And I often paint starting from Black /white value~ it is easier to check if the value is right or not… when satisfied the b/w result, then I use color adjustment tool (like color balance..) to add color.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
YCH: Stay with family or talk to friends to exchange the thought, that is really useful for me…
Even, sometime I will leave the work to do other things or sleeping, let my brain take rest and change another thought.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
YCH: The most is coming from the world. Watching people, reading books and internet. Watching is very important thing for me, anything could be inspiring, and I listen to music…
SG: Can you please tell us little about how you got started in the Gaming Industry?
YCH: My first career was in a cartoon animation studio in New Zealand, I worked as a 3D modeler and sometimes help doing some animation clips. After a while, I found my passion was working with concept art and more realistic art style, so I went back to Taiwan, I tried to find a concept art job in games (because there is no movie industry in Taiwan, if I want to find a “painting” job, the only way is working in game industry ), but I still worked as a 3D modeler in games. It was hard for me to find concept art position, because I wasn’t good at painting at that time….
After working for a while, I received a phone call for an interview from another game company (they are a branch of USA Game company 7 Studios in Taiwan). And, I am really lucky because they wanted to find a concept artist. They saw my portfolio and thought maybe I had the potential, they let me try~
I know it was chance, so I worked very hard everyday, and any task I tried to do my best at. Everyday after work, I still practice and practice , even on weekends, and I learn a lot from that time even if it is suffering. It was a very good experience for me!!
SG: What kind of deadlines do you have to work under in this industry?
YCH: A mountain of characters, props , scene( level ) you need to finish every milestone.
SG: How much do your clients ask you to change this or that? How much are you willing to change?
YCH: Communication and keeping the direction is the most important thing. So far, my clients give me lot of space. Sometimes, I like to try some new things they didn’t think of before. Sometimes they like the new ideas. Some changes happen like the types they don’t think are suitable, bigger or smaller or the color should be change…. etc. And these I am willing to change because the client have the commercial consideration that I may not notice in design. And this part I am still learning… So I often suggest clients to provide references, before starting the project… that could really save me a lot time, sometime a picture is better than a thousand words, for commercial, time is the most important thing.
SG: What is your favorite game to play?
YCH: Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Heart series, Beautiful Katamari, God of War, Gear of War, Super Mario, Little big planet, Bayonetta, Devil may cry series….
SG: Where has your work been seen?
YCH: My website, my blog, and some internal publications (EXOTIQUE 2 ,4,5 ) (2D Artist Magazine) (Animation Today Magazine) (EXO2 Magazine) (Animation Reporter Magazine) ( Artzmania Magazine ) (graphika manila09 book) (Zeixs Asia Book), Geisai Taiwan Exhibition , is a solo exhibition in Taipei, late year 2009.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
YCH: Most frequently new update on my website and my blog.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
YCH: Have enough money and paint for myself.
SG: What is your favorite color?
YCH: Black x White x Pink
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
YCH: James Jean. I like the peace feeling from his painting.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
YCH: No…..
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
YCH: Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman ( still reading..)
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
YCH: Tokyo, there are so many cool and interesting things and people. Every time I go Japan i get inspired. They have high-tech and also their own traditional culture mixed together. And people wear really cool and strange clothes on the street. That is why they could create new and good art, because it surrounds them. Its really creative.
SG: Any final words of advice?
YCH: No matter what people saying, just doing what you love, hold the faith, keep the passion and you will find the road!! World peace!!
