Spraygraphic Interview with Jeremy Geddes

SG: Where do you currently live and work? Please tell us about yourself?

JG: I’m a painter living in Melbourne, Australia. Before I switched to full time painting I worked in game development.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

JG: All my work is either oil on linen or oil on board.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

JG: I start with the initial concepts which can bounce around in my head for awhile. Then i produce one or more studies, which i live with, making small changes as they occur to me. Once I’m completely happy with that I start working on the final piece, building it up in layers of glazing. A large painting can take several months to complete.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

JG: It’s not really an issue with me, given the production time of my paintings. I always have 4 or 5 ideas for other paintings waiting in the wings. I just pick the one that speaks to me the most at that time to move on to.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

JG: I’m trying to capture specific emotional states in my paintings, so it’s not really about finding inspiration beyond that.

SG: Can you please tell us a little about your cosmonaut paintings? How did that come about?

They are just self generated as images in my head at the start, that wouldn’t go away. From there I’ve been building on the concept and letting it evolve.

SG: Can you please tell us a little about your painting Heat Death

JG: Hopefully, I communicate everything I want to say through the painting itself. I’m not interested in giving it a didactic final meaning. I just want to spark questions in the viewer.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

JG: I’ve had shows in Australia and Hong Kong and my work is in private collections in various places around the globe

SG: Where will it be seen next?

JG: The next exhibition is with Ashley Wood in Hong Kong in November.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

JG: I’m no good at working to briefs, so my dream assignment is to be left alone to pursue my own paintings!

SG: What is your favorite color?

JG: No idea, it’s not about colors, It’s the way colors work together.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

JG: I’m not sure I have a favorite artist. Right now i’m looking at people like Andrew Wyeth, Antonio Lopez Garcia and Edward Hopper

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

JG: No magazines, The books I’m reading right now are “Authoritarianism and Polarization in American Politics” by Marc Hetherington and Jonathan Weiler and “Prisons of Poverty” by Loic Wacquant

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

JG:In my studio

SG: Any final words of advice?

JG: Keep doing what you’re doing, just try to do it better
