Spraygraphic Interview with Alejandro Cardona

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

AC: I have always had great interest in art & culture, picture books and creating images since I could remember. I graduated in 2007 from Sheridan Institute in ON, Canada with a BA in Illustration. I been freelancing illustration and design since graduating and my work has appeared in political & culture magazines, general interest/consumer magazines, city guides, poetry & journal literature, stationary and galleries.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

AC: I reside in the greater Toronto area and work in a small studio space in my home. I recently joined the marketing/ creative services team at the Living Arts Centre, an arts organization that promotes the development of performing and visual arts.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

AC: I primarily work with gouache, watercolor, pen and digital elements.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

AC: All my ideas and concepts begin in pen and then transferred in color and polished in digital. Various sketches and brainstorming are involved before my work is at the final stage. The rough sketch is a base, and in the creative process improvisation and other elements create the final output.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

AC: Stay in tune with pop culture and up to date with current news and affairs. I Always sketch ideas and concepts whether they make sense or not this helps to keep my creative mind flowing. Reading and acknowledging good advertising and ideas also helps get around the block.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

AC: My surroundings and experiences are my source of inspiration. I am always observing and finding satire and humor in everyday situations and pop culture.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

AC: My work has mostly appeared in political/culture magazines, general interest & consumer magazines, city guides, poetry & journal literature, stationary and galleries.
My illustration and design has received national exposure in Applied Arts, American Illustration and Creative Quarterly magazines, along with other forums on the web, such as Juxtapoz & Illustrophile.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

AC: One of my goals is to write and create my own series of children’s books. I am working on a few ideas and plan to shop around my ideas and concepts to local publishers.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

AC: My dream assignment would be a series of children’s books.

SG: What is your favorite color?

AC: My favorite color has always been yellow.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

AC: One of my favorite artists is Edel Rodriguez. He is one of the great illustrators of our day and has had a great career up to date. I admire the fact that his Cuban roots transfer so beautifully in to his work.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

AC: I continuously read the New Yorker, Globe & Mail and other general interest literature. I am currently reading a book by Paul Arden, “Whatever you think, think the opposite”.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

AC: My local bookstore and Indigo are always great to hang out at. The art scene in Toronto is thriving and it’s always great to catch a great art show or event at a local gallery.

SG: Any final words of advice?

AC: The creative arts are a very competitive industry and market. In today’s age you need to be versatile and be able to express your ideas in many different ways but still keeping true to yourself.
