Spraygraphic Interview with Filmmaker Alex Luster

By Spraygraphic | October 14, 2009

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

AL: My name is Alex Luster also known as PR!MO. I am an aspiring documentary filmmaker working on my first movie “Stick ‘Em Up!”

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

AL: I live on the east side of Houston, Texas. My work is mainly based in Texas. By day I am a producer/editor for a tv station in Houston and by night I have several independent projects that I am working on.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

AL: I mainly work with video, film & still photography.

SG: What kind of equipment do you use?

AL: My passion is video editing and I use several programs on a Macintosh computer. Some of the programs I use are Final Cut Pro, After Effects & Motion. When I shoot video I use anything & everything I can get my hands on. My main video camera is a Panasonic HVX200a. When I work with stills, I prefer my Nikon D300 with a wide variety of low f-stop lenses.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

AL: Ideally, a concept will come to mind. From there I will run it by a few key people to see if it’s worth pursuing. If I get positive feedback on my idea I then seek further inspiration from movies, museums, etc. The rest of my process involves an open mind and if all goes well, a worthy product.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to make something work?

AL: I find that my best remedy for a block is to step away from my project. I’ll leave my studio to spend some time with my kids or catch a movie with my wife. Many times when I’ve tried to force something it worsens the situation.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

AL: It might sounds cliché, but life is my inspiration. There are so many things around me that are inspiration worthy like my wonderful little family & good friends.

SG: What do you look for when you are picking subjects to work with? Is it story? Money? Aesthetics? etc…

AL: Being a passionate editor, story telling is key for me. The story is my projects’ backbone because without it all you have are flashy images with no real substance.

SG: Do you bring your camera with you everywhere with you or do you leave it home when you go out on the town?

AL: I always joke that if I could have a camera lens surgically attached to my forehead life would be so much easier. If that’s any indication, I do try to carry at least one camera at all times.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

AL: Since I am an aspiring filmmaker, my first documentary has yet to be seen. My television work, on the other hand, has been viewed around the country. I also have my work on the web.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

AL: Not sure since “Stick ‘Em Up!” is still in production.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

AL: Good question. My dreams change from day to day, so it’s hard to say.

SG: What is your favorite film?

AL: Not sure about a favorite but I do have some that I looked to for inspiration. Dogtown & Z-Boys for story telling and editing, Airplane for comedy, Hard Days Night for unusual comedy & there are plenty more.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

AL: I don’t have a particular favorite at the moment. I can appreciate all art.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

AL: I just started reading a book about Steve Jobs entitled “The Second Coming of Steve Jobs.” Great read so far.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

AL: I am what you would call a homebody, whenever I have free time I like to hang out with my very active children.

SG: Any final words of advice?

AL: When it comes to how you put your project together, what matters most is the vision and not the tools. In my book, it’s all about the final product.

Hey, I to am an aspireing photographer who was recently bitten by the houston street art bug and now find myself climbing buildings to get shots of local art before they are covered. Excited to see your doc. And to show my buddies who are also interested. If you have info on choice spots around htown to get some good shots plz share. I feel this side of houston is under estimated and appreciated. Keep up the good work.
