Spraygraphic Interview with Ferris Plock

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

FP: My name is Ferris Plock and I love my family and my work. I am continually trying to get better at what I do. I definitely engage my artwork as work in progress and hope that I can learn more skills from practice and collaboration. My major collaboration partner is my wife Kelly Tunstall

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

FP: I spend most of my time working at my studio in the Western Addition which is a neighborhood in San Francisco. I am strolling distance from the “Full House” houses from that awesome show with Bob Saget.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

FP: I work with a bunch of different mediums but, almost always with acrylic, spraypaint, ink, goldleaf, and polymer medium.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

FP: It varies from what project I am doing… I like to experiment a lot which means I fuck up a lot of paintings but, sometimes
I find something new that makes all the mistakes worth the trouble. I work primarily from sketches I have compiled. I am definitely an illustrator that paints and nowhere close to being a painter that paints.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

FP: I approach my art maybe not in the most romantic way… for me it’s work… I know that’s not the “soulful” answer but, it’s the way I function. However, I absolutely have to be drawing every day… I go crazy if I don’t… I fell that even if the work is total crap and I end up throwing it out or painting over it… at least I am getting my practice in… I feel like I got started a bit late with painting and drawing and life is short so I don’t have time to get blocked or whine about nothing to create… Everything is inspirational… breathing, shitting, drinking, walking, pissing, talking, blah blah blah it is all amazing.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

FP: I think everything is inspirational… Humor is hugely important for me… I know it’s a bit dated to say but, I love Dave Chapelle and listen to him at the studio a bunch… His standup is amazing… I also like to listen to radio lab on NPR and books on tape a bunch…

SG: Where has your work been seen?

FP: San Francisco,Tokyo, Taiwan, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Barcelona, My Mom’s House, LA, NYC, Portland, Seattle, Atlanta,Phoenix, Denver, San Diego, El Segundo, Walla Walla Washington, Big Sur, East Palo Alto, Oakland, and elsewhere.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

FP: I have a couple of shows coming up in San Francisco.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

FP: Working on collaborations with the wifey.

SG: What is your favorite color?

FP: Galahad: Blue. No, yel…

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

FP: Robert Rauschenberg because I do. Mike Giant because his line work is insane. Mars1 because he transformed for awesome to exceptional. Kelly Tunstall because she is smart and can flow effortlessly through a painting.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

FP: I just finished rereading “On the Road” and “The Fountainhead.” I am currently reading a book about corn and how it is basically in 9 out of 10 things we consume…

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

FP: I feel like all my characters have a bit of me in them.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

FP: In La Selva Beach where I grew up surfing and hanging out on the beach. It is a small, sleepy beach town where me and the wife go to recharge.

SG: Any final words of advice?

FP: Nuture the relationships you have with the people you love. Life is pretty difficult and it has plenty of fucked up stuff going on. However, a lot of it can be
overcome if you have a good posse of people surrounding you…
