Spraygraphic Interview with Ted Kim

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

TK: For a number of years I was working in the video game industry but I’ve recently ventured into freelance illustration within various fields, but still keep tabs with video game work too.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

TK: I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and work in my humble den wearing my pj’s half the time.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

TK: Exclusively digital - it’s just so convenient…and less messy!

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

TK: Like many artists, I start off with thumbnails until I’m happy with a composition. Go to a rough sketch then build it up from there. Depending on the piece I’ll either clean it up or go straight into painting.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

TK: Best thing to do is to step away and clear the head. Have a bite to eat, watch an inspiring movie or flip through an art book. Usually just taking a breather does the trick.

SG: What kind of deadlines do you work with when producing this kind of work?

TK: I try to allow myself some buffer just in case, sometimes things can get hairy but so far I never been late, and usually early (knock on wood).

SG: Do the companies come back to you and say “change this” or “change that?”

TK: For the most part it’s pretty reasonable, usually the particulars about the development process are outlined ahead of time.

SG: How much are you willing to change? Is there some kind of negotiation process you go through?

TK: It really depends, it all comes down to time and time is a commodity that also comes with a price tag of course!

SG: Where has your work been seen?

TK: In the past my work has been concept art for video games: Cel Damage, Full Auto, Full Auto 2: Battlelines. These days I do a fair amount of work for role-playing games like Champions of the Universe (Hero Games) and Legend of the Five Rings (AEG).

SG: Where will it be seen next?

TK: Currently I’m working on an educational graphic novel for the Timeline comic series published through Rubicon Publishing.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

TK: Hmm, that’s something that’s always evolving. It would be great to work on an animated feature someday. In my spare time I’m putting an art book together, I’d like to publish more of my own work in the near future.

SG: What is your favorite color?

TK: Ever since I was young, blue has always been my favorite color. It’s calm, cool and collected.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

TK: That’s too hard to say, there are so many artists I admire. However, I can name two artists that heavily influenced my decision to pursue illustration as a career: Jim Lee and Bruce Timm.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

TK: I’m waiting on the March issue of Photoshop Creative, myself and some friends did an interview for that so I’m eager to check it out!

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

TK: Haha, well I did a caricature which is pretty much my avatar for my official site and any site bearing my name and art.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

TK: I’m a homebody at heart, a nice relaxing evening with my wife and daughter is always a pleasure.

SG: Any final words of advice?

TK: Never feel intimidated by great talent or sound critique, they should be fuel to motivate your own development and inspire you to grow as an artist.
