Spraygraphic Interview with Luis D’Alkmin

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

LD: I’m a artist, architect and a graphic designer. Just a typicall jazz music fan, dog lover and always over a good cabernet sauvignon wine.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

LD: I currently reside in São Paulo, Brazil. My workspace its a huge studio where I paint, do sculpture and work on digital prints.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

LD: Basically I like to mix conventional and modern digital techniques.

For me its necessary knowing how to work with acrylic paint, polyester resin, clay, stencils and 2D-3D softwares.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

LD: I call my working process a “disciplined chaos” cause I try to address several projects at once ranging from conceiving acrylic paintings on canvas and even working with objects encapsulated in resins (such as women forms etc). As a graphic designer and an artist one needs a certain timing to develop their own creative process and there is a constant act of brainstorming.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

LD: I usually don’t have creative blocks cause I vary my gesture in the making process of my artwork. I do that in order to distance myself from what Im working on and be able to analyse it with a different point of view. That gives me the necessary feedback to reflect on to the next stage and finish them. I only get stressed out when I’m not able to work.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

LD: Peoples, movies, comics, books, songs and blogs.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

LD: My work can be seen in a few galleries in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Miami beach. I’ve also illustrated quite a few brazilian magazines. Nowadays I’m very excited about my blog, cause after a whole year I had never been expecting thousands of visitors. I think that a self publication blog can only bring the artist and his public closer together in a positive way. I post new work almost daily and that makes possible for the public to accompany my creative process in the making.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

LD: Right now in my blog and see the new 2009 print series “Matches your sofa” and some new illustrations

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

LD: Maybe a computer capacity terabytes based for some projects I have in mind.

Talvez um computador com capacidade de processamento de terabytes para alguns projetos…

SG: What is your favorite color?

LD: Blue and blue, then blue…

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

LD: There are many favorite artist that I get inspired by. Mostly from the second half of the XX century like Raushemberg, Warhol, Bacon, Harrison, Pollock, Newton and Moebius.

My greatest influence definitely comes from pop art. Specially because all my work has to do with techniques that prioritize different ways of reproduction, such as, silkscreen, lithography, and photography.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

LD: Re-reading Clifford Simak’s City.

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

LD: I’ve tried a while ago, but I always find more interesting things to work with besides my own image.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

LD: My studio, Cap D’Antibes…and with my daughter

SG: Any final words of advice?

LD: Feel the force, do prefer the blue pill over the red one and work hard!
