Spraygraphic Interview with Percy Feils
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
PF: I struggle to make ends meet in New York.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
PF: New York, NY
SG: What mediums do you work with?
PF: At this moment, mostly pencil, pen, gouache and materials that are easy to travel with.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
PF: I draw a man and I erase, I add pieces of his built environment- objects and instances , I add some more thoughts three months later, I erase again, I draw some more and erase another part, close the book, travel to another environment and finish over time. I document passage of time, layers of now and the ghost of what once was.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
PF: I read or walk.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
PF: People, buildings, train tracks, all cities, travel, solitude.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
PF: Oakland, New York, Boston, Mexico.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
PF: I have no shows lined up, I’m currently working on a book. Showing frequently curtails the quality of my work, so I’ve cut down on it.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
PF: To build my book of the human landscape– my representation of the world around me. I guess I’ve been working on this for years.
SG: What is your favorite color?
PF: Brown.
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
PF: There are too many to list, but we are all connected in some way or another. Owen Jones is the most elementary. His design is a visual representation of the fibonacci series– a mathematical code that governs all creation and it’s byproduct. Everyone lives by this code whether they know it or not.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
PF: Inferno by Dante Alighieri.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
PF: Most of my work is a self portrait.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
PF: City Streets late at night. Train tracks by day.
SG: Any final words of advice?
PF: Not yet.
