Spraygraphic Interview with Karen Yung
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
KY: I was born in Hong Kong and was there until the age of 13 and then came to America for school and have stayed here ever since. I’ve moved a lot over the past 16 years and haven’t really stayed in a place for longer than 2-3 years. So home is everywhere.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
KY: I currently “live” in Venice California. I do freelance web design (yungraphik.com) and do all my work online, since I’m always traveling (currently in Australia and Bali next.)
SG: What mediums do you work with?
KY: I work with pencil, pen, paint, computer, photos, paper and paste.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
KY: I usually have to be in the right mood to sit down and sketch something on paper or make some cool collage. Sometimes I come up with something good for the street, and then I run to kinko’s to blow it up and go paste it on the wall late night or early morning.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
KY: I go ride my bicycle or do something else until I get in the right mood. I don’t force myself to do anything.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
KY: Through my surroundings and travels, life-changing events, and being in love.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
KY: My work has been seen mostly through my blog and also on the street by my apartment. To be honest, I’m still working on my art and not many people have seen it yet.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
KY: Perhaps Australia.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
KY: This might sound cheesy, but I just want to travel around the world spreading love and peace.
SG: What is your favorite color?
KY: I love all colors, especially bright colors, like red and green.
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
KY: I don’t think I have a favorite artist, because there are too many.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
KY: Lonely Planet to Bali
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
KY: I actually have a self portrait right on my business card.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
KY: At home, at the beach, in the snowy mountains…on my bicycle.
SG: Any final words of advice?
KY: Life is short, follow your heart, respect your body and soul.
