Spraygraphic interview with Aimee Margolis

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

AM: Hello, I am Aimee Margolis, (alias A.I. Margolis on Spraygraphic) and work in many mediums and live in Manhattan, USA.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

AM: In New York City, in Mid-Town Manhattan. My studio is in the same location as where I live,
I like to do my art work very late at night to 3 in the morning. That’s when I feel the most creative.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

AM: My major in school (Boston University School of Fine Arts) was sculpture, minored in painting and photography. So I speak in many art mediums including video. When I am invited to do a space in an exhibition, I will use many mediums to explore and solve a problem in the installation. I will paint the precious white gallery walls, for example to match exactly my painting so you can’t tell where one begins and one ends, with sculpture and video windows for over all dynamics.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

AM: First the concept comes to my mind, it could be a word or a play of words, then I will get the image in my mind. That’s when I decide on what medium I should speak in for that particular piece. I work on many projects at a time, each feeding each other. The work that is displayed here are some pieces for Scope Hamptons and I chose to take them out of the gallery space and put them in nature like an art picnic of sorts. We have the plates the table cloth and the ants. These photographs of this event are 20″ by 30″ in size.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

AM: I have so many ideas, I need input from outsiders on which path to focus on, because I can be all over the place. I consider myself an art producer, everything I do is an art form. From my edible art cookies, to my video TV program on Manhattan Cable, Project Art Show- Fine Art television to talking about politics.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

AM: From my life. I try to break the walls of the gallery in my mind and see art outside the box and the confines of insideness of art.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

AM: My work has been seen in museums and galleries here and abroad. Outside the gallery box at ArtWalk, Art Around the Park. On television and of course the production of Project Art Show, art television program on Time/Warner Manhattan Cable twice a month. I was on the cover of the New York Times this month too, everything I do is art, even when it is in the vernacular.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

AM: I am always showing here or there, but I’m doing a series of work that I’m looking for a special space to show the new work. A new place that I haven’t seen before.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

AM: I have always wanted to have one of my dream projects done that never has been realized. I wish for the Bill Board Project to be realized, where my Mingling Word Photograph pieces would be put on large billboards all around town. Instead of advertising billboards, there would be art-tizing in the community.

SG: What is your favorite color?

AM: Red and yellow.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

AM: I like Botticelli and Cindy Sherman.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

AM: Utopia by Thomas Moore

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

AM: I have done many. A life size in oil, I did when I was 20 years old and someone bought it and it is hanging in Tel-Aviv.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

AM: My studio. The MTW Garden, or at Westerly Organic Food Market.

SG: Any final words of advice?

AM: Never say never, there is something right around the corner.

In our everyday life, we often stroll mechanically through the same streets or places, without paying any attention to the disturbing visible signs surrounding us. Most often, the routine makes us blind to the magic aspect of reality. If the world we have built influences our vision of reality much more than we could realize, does it really lost its mysterious significance yet ? Urban Paradoxes (The work of Aimée Margolis) intends to make us see our environment differently by introducing the ideas of surprise and unexpected sign, opening our minds to another dimension. In a way, seeing beyond the appearances of reality, isn’t it precisely the essence of art ?
