Spraygraphic Interview with Sara Franco
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
SF: I studied Arts at the Lisbon Arts College and I work as a freelance illustrator and web designer. I’m fascinated by life and people and for an urban dimension that is inherent in all my work.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
SF: I’m based in Lisbon, and here it’s where I work. I have a studio at home where I develop my ideas, collect garbage, books and dvds.
SG: What mediums do you work with?
SF: Mixed media. Much of my digital work has an analog base. I’m always trying new stuff with photography, textures and collages.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
SF: I work a lot by impulse. The gesture and intuition are always present. Even thinking about the digital way as a much more contained technique, the final result always take advantage of the unexpected. A simulation of unexpected, actually. I don’t have a very lienar production. I have peaks of production.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
SF: Well, I try not to worry to much. I have a few “secret formules”. I mean, if I really have to finish something and I get blocked I try ways I already tried other times, or appeal to my archive of sketches.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
SF: Well, I think there’s an all universe I give a preference to use as a reference. Even so, everything that surrounds me can be inspiring. People, the streets, a movie, a book, music, etc.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
SF: In the moment my work can be seen at Arte Lisboa. I’m represented at the Contemporary Art Fair by Galeria Bernardo Marques.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
SF: I’ll participate at the Pecha Kucha Night Lisbon, which is a cicle of lectures about art, where groups of artists are invited to show and talk about their work. This one it’s the 5th edition and it’s going to happen in December. In parallel I’ve been doing stuff for music posters and for a zine cover called Ousider, that will be out soon.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
SF: To work with Tarantino would be awesome! It’s a small dream, isn’t it?
SG: What is your favorite color?
SF: Usually I would say my favorite color is blue, but times to times I fall in love with other colors. I’m having an affair with orange, lately.
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
SF: I have more then one favorite artist, all for different reasons. Rauschenberg, Nan Goldin, Basquiat, Ashley Wood, Celia Calle, Tarantino…
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
SF: I just read Irvine Welsh’s “The Bedroom secrets of the Master Chefs”.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
SF: One or two, yes. (It’s a funny question, because one of the things I like most is to take pictures of myself, most of them with a silly face…)one of the self portraits I did can be seen at my agency’s website profile, next to my bio and other stuff.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
SF: Usually I go out at Bairro Alto, a Lisbon district, or downtown, but i also like to organize parties at home with my closest friends.
SG: Any final words of advice?
SF: Be happy!
