Spraygraphic Interview with Hannes D´haese

SG: Please tell us about yourself

HD: Born in Belgium; son of artist Begga D´haese and nephew of Roel and Reinhoud D´haese who joined the COBRA group World traveler or should I say barhopper until I met my muse. Action painter inspired by K Appel, B Lindstrom, A Jorn amongst others.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

HD: I live and work in Knokke, Belgium. After my world travels I decided that stability is eventually a must if you want to concentrate on your art.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

HD: I only work with acrylic paint as I am an explosive action painter, I have no patience so the paint must dry fast so that I can continue.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

HD: I paint like Jackson Pollock flat on a table or the ground, with a brush or straight out of the tube.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

HD: I tend not to be blocked very often. The more emotions the more inspiration. Be that good or sad feelings. so the more upheaval you had or have in your life the more and the better your paintings, not always pleasant but that s just the way it is.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

HD:  There was the recent death of my father, there is my muse who doesn t talk to me. Love can be a huge drive. when I’m heartbroken the colous tend to be a lot darker, when my feelings are mixed the colors are mixed, when I’m happy the colors are bright. So I find my inspiration in happiness and sadness surrounding me.

SG: Where has your work been seen? And where will it be seen next?

HD: It has been seen in several locations in Belgium and will be seen in Antwerp, Monaco, London next year. It is amazing how sudden success can be.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

HD: Dream art assignment. I have several actually. A big gallery in NY and LA would be one. Chances are I will have one on the world expo in 2010. Bust most of all I would like to be a good will ambassador with my paintings for a charity organization that helps children. They are the innocent of the world so I would like to make 20 large paintings (for free) each year that get auctioned of and help children.

SG: What is your favorite color?

HD: Blue , I love the sea in my past before I became a better known artist I worked on a cruise ship for rccl.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

HD: All the cobra artists, my mother and of course J Pollock. My mother for the support and commitment, the cobra artists for the colors and J Pollock because I used to lead the same life, but luckily I snapped out of it before it was to late.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

HD: Magazines, art magazines, this week Wallpaper and Art Investor.

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

HD: Self portrait no, not my thing I stick to my own style.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

HD: Mostly my art studio, it used to be any bar with alcohol and pretty woman, but when you live for your art or fall in love you need to stop that.

SG: Any final words of advice?

HD: Find your own style, stick to your style once you find it, let your emotions loose in your art, stay moderate, be convinced that what you make is good if your not convinced nobody will be convinced. Find a balance between your private life and your painting. Stay away from alcohol, the biggest stories are told at the bar and millions have been made, but in the end if you hang at the bar every night you will not paint only tell stories and end up being a dreamer. I used to drink like a fool and became successful, when i stopped drinking and became serious about my art. And the 3 most important things : never give up, never give up, never give up…life as an artist isn t easy, but nothing is impossible.

My muse

When I met my muse, in 2007, I had all but given up on being an artist.

I was just an empty shell, waiting to be thrown away.

I was a world traveller, but I only travelled from country to country,

from bar to bar and once in a blue moon I would make a painting.

But then I met the most wonderful woman who gave me back my heart and my soul.

She is smart, beautiful and most of all very special.

She gave me back my life and when I fell in love with her, I became the artist

I am now. Without her I would not even be an artist and my life would have no meaning.

But for now, thanks to her, I am simply emotion in motion.
