Spraygraphic Interview with Michael Cutlip
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
MC: I’m 34 years old, married, have 2 great kids and spend my days painting. Can’t ask for much more than that out of life.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
MC: I live and work in Oakland CA. My studio is located behind my house…so you can’t beat the commute!
SG: What mediums do you work with?
MC: My stuff is very much mixed media. I use all types of paint, acylic, latex (house paints), spray paints, and oils. All sorts of drawing media and collage. I started doing xerox tranfers in recent days…which has been quite rewarding. Generally, I like to work with anything that drys fast….I limit my oils to a sort of “rub on and off” type process…just as a sort of patina Thick oils that take a week to dry are not my cup to tea.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
MC: I try not to plan out a painting nor think too hard about it. My process is very random and really about the process itself. I just start putting on paint and see where it takes me. There is no right or wrong way…every move takes you to the next.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
MC: I like to throw things at the painting…it’s a good stress release!
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
MC: I find most of my inspiration through the process of working. Each move inspires the next. If that is not the case, then the painting is failing.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
MC: Pretty much throughout the country…east to west coast. I had my first show in Europe this past summer…in Austria.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
MC: I have a show at the Donna Seager Gallery this December (2008). The gallery is in San Rafael, CA.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
MC: I like doing murals. It would be great to do some large scale, high exposure wall piece somewhere.
SG: What is your favorite color?
MC: I’ve never really liked those “what is your favorite” type questions….but, there is something about pink and turquoise that really gets me going! Although, you will find me wearing nothing but black…so who knows…..
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
MC: My kids! That’s the real stuff, right there! We spend the rest of our lives trying to get that magic back!
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
MC: Well, as I mentioned, I have two little ones, so a good Dr. Suess is the extent of my reading these days!
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
MC: I imagine they all are….
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
MC: My home/studio….wherever my family is.
SG: Any final words of advice?
MC: My old painting teacher used to tell me “Keep your brushes wet”…yes, I suppose that is the best we can do. The rest will follow…..

I am so inspired by your art. The use of a great variety of images along with the paint and transfers is the type of material I love seeing how you put it all together.
