Spraygraphic Interview with Derek Albeck
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
DA: My Name is Derek Albeck, I was born in the San Fernando Valley just outside Hollywood. I like to drink coffee and hang out with my dogs.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
DA: I currently live and work in Los Angeles. I work out of my house right now but I just got a studio that I will be moving all my work into over the course of the next month.
SG: What mediums do you work with?
DA: Mostly just Acrylic and ink, lately I have also been drawing a lot in pencil.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
DA: The work generally starts with the concept. Right now I am currently developing three separate groups of works that are all figuratively inspired. I generally start with a selection of photos that I choose to work from, most of the photos are of my friends and people I surround myself with. With that I create multiple drawings from the photos until I come up with a composition that I feel is adequate to work from. Then I transfer the drawing onto the surface and I begin to paint.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
DA: When I’m feeling blocked I will usually just pick up a book and read…. Blocks are one of the most difficult things to tackle so I find that its really just a matter of being patient and clearing you mind until things work themselves out.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
DA: Friends and family
SG: Where has your work been seen?
DA: I have exhibit work across the states as well as Canada.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
DA: I have upcoming shows in Los Angeles at Project Gallery, in London with Urban Angel, and in Seattle at BLVD gallery . I will also be having my first solo show at POVevolving in Chinatown Los Angeles in 2009.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
DA: Anything that takes myself and my art around the world.
SG: What is your favorite color?
DA: Black
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
DA: There are a lot but this week I’m really liking the work of LA artist Cleon Peterson…I really like his flat use of color and his violent narratives. His work seems to contain a strong use of allegory touching on the violence that we see and read about everyday. It obviously can be read in a variety of ways but I think his work is strongest when seen as a critique on brutality of the human existence.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
DA: I’m currently reading, “The Island of the Day Before” by Umberto Eco as well as “The Way we Eat: Why our Food Choices matter” by Peter Singer and Jim Mason.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
DA: A lot of my newer works contain self portraits. A few of them are about to go into upcoming shows.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
DA: The beach is really relaxing
SG: Any final words of advice?
DA: “If your going through Hell, Keep going” Winston Churchill
