Spraygraphic Interview with Dylan McConnell / Secret Asian Trustfund
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
DM: My name is Dylan and I used to live in the coldest place ever, but it was nice. I am part owner of a record label Stereotype , and have a music project called The Snowfields .
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
DM: Portland, Oregon
SG: What mediums do you work with?
DM: These days, generally a computer - it just makes everything easier - both to create and deliver.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
DM: Well when working on band posters or album covers, I try and listen to the band and get a feel for the music, then start sticking things together. I wish there was a more romantic way to phrase it, but I don’t want to kid you.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
DM: Put it away for a little while, procrastinate, etc. Sometimes coffee works. Or just start on something else. For a while. Or longer.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
DM: Ummmmmmmmm…vacation.
SG: Can you tell us a little about the name Secret Asian Trustfund. How did that come about?
DM: Like most things ridiculous, it started as a joke that I can’t remember. I am going to rename the whole shebang soon "tiny little hammers" because it is mildly better. And I am not Asian either. But its good for anonymity.
SG: Can you please tell us how you got into doing poster designs for so many people/groups?
DM: That is a good question - I really don’t know. People found out I was cheap, I suppose.
SG: Do you have a favorite poster design? If so, Why?
DM: Eh. Haven’t found it yet - someday I’ll make something worthwhile.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
DM: Well these days around the Knitting Factory in NYC and a lot of telephone poles in Portland. There was once some traveling show from a college in GA of poster art, but that was a while ago.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
DM: Hmmmmmmmm. I have some album covers coming up, but those are still in the works.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
DM: Getting paid a living wage for doing design.
SG: What is your favorite color?
DM: These days red.
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
DM: Francis Bacon - because he scares the shit out of me. Also his palate is fab.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
DM: Tape Op and The Golden Compass .
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
DM: A long time ago - hopefully far, far away.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
DM: Coffee shops and bars. One is more conducive to working that the other.
SG: Any final words of advice?
DM: Don’t hesitate to work pro-bono every now and then if it is for something you like. It opens up all sorts of opportunities that might not be apparent at first.
