Spraygraphic Interview with Allan Wexler
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
AW: I am an architect trapped in an artist’s body. I am an artist trapped in an architect’s body.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
AW: Chelsea, New York City. I’ve been here since 1978. Now the art world has come to me. During the summers I have a studio on the North Fork of Long Island.
SG: What mediums do you work with?
AW: I work with many different things. I usually work with dimensional lumber. For small scale pieces usually chip board and museum board. Drawings and prints also.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
AW: I build first then I think about what I’ve made, then I make something else as a response.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
AW: I make a list of things to do very quickly without hesitation. I make tiny sketches many within severe time constraints. I change the media and change the tools that have been working with.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
AW: The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker and On the Art of Building in Ten Books by Leon Battista Alberti . Sometimes objects found at flea markets that are present in my studio.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
AW: I am represented and show with Ronald Feldman Gallery in Soho. I just had an exhibition in Auckland, New Zealand. Lately I have been making public art works. Two years ago a public sculpture was installed in the Hudson River Park at 29th Street.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
AW: A site specific sculpture will be installed next season in the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. I am planning an exhibition at Ronald Feldman Gallery next year.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
AW: Any assignment can become a dream assignment.
SG: What is your favorite color?
AW: Red
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
AW: This is the most difficult question. Favorite artists change with each period of my career. As a young artist I was most influenced by Andy Warhol , Sol Lewitt . I am still excited about the work of Walter Pichler .
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
AW: The Craftsman by Richard Sennett .
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
AW: Yes. I am working on one now which is the negative form of my body made in the same brick as a dormitory at Ohio University in Athens where it will be installed this summer.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
AW: I have to admit that I do like to spend time in museums. I often drift into the Galleries of Applied Arts.
SG: Any final words of advice?
AW: Be sure that you continue to enjoy the process. Don’t keep your early work in your studio except for what you are currently working on.
