Spraygraphic Interview with Kamilla Weinhardt

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

KW: I’m a freelance graphic designer. I’ve grew up in a small town called Ross-on-Wye and moved to London 8 years ago. I’m half English and half Hungarian. I really want to move somewhere sunny and get a dog.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

KW: I live in Camden in London with my boyfriend Dave. I have a day job in an advertising agency so I work there and do the rest of my bits and pieces from home.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

KW: Apple mac, found paper, found objects, pens, ink.. that kind of thing.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

KW: I go and take photos and I write down all my ideas (including the stupid ones) as I like to start visualizing straight away. If I’m working on something like a logo, I tend to work in Illustrator and my initial stages always look like my sketch book pages (a total mess). I collect images from the internet and from books and magazines so I always have a load of reference for each project.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

KW: I don’t get stuck that often but I find leaving the country usually helps. If that’s not possible I just distract myself by watching films and eating and then wait for inspiration to strike.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

KW: Music (I can’t work without it), funny words, the depressing sights of London, old Hungarian posters, Vasarely, punk record sleeves.

SG: Can you please tell us a little about your project, Hungary.

KW: Every time I go away I collect objects from that place. I take photos, buy postcards and look for discarded junk. It helps me to remember my trip and is really easy to do as I always end up finding strange and interesting items! Most photos from that project were taken at the Ecseri flea market which is just outside Budapest.

SG: Can you please tell us a little about DJ LLL.

KW: I’m afraid it’s top secret

SG: Can you please tell us a little about your working relationship with Birdie. How did that begin?

KW: It was a one off project but my friend Jane used to work for them so I got the job through her.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

KW: Online, and in books and magazines.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

KW: I was asked to contribute to a book about pattern design which is out soon.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

KW: To go on a year long finding trip around the world (and look mainly for funny letters and photos) would be exciting. I would make a film and several books about it.

SG: What is your favorite color?

KW: Red

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

KW: I don’t have a favorite but at the moment I really like Christian Marclay because he does amazing things with old record sleeves!

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

KW: I’m reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier . I read loads of magazines, including all the trashy ones.

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

KW: I did a hideous etching at school, I think my dad has it.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

KW: In the sunshine

SG: Any final words of advice?

KW: Guilty feet have got no rhythm
