Spraygraphic Interview Johnny Ryan
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
JR: I’m a cartoonist.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
JR: Los Angeles.
SG: What mediums do you work with?
JR: Ink, paper, sometimes gouache, but not too often.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
JR: I pencil out the comic page I’m working on, then I ink it.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
JR: I just keep drawing mediocre comics until I come up with a fucking awesome comic.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
JR: Inspiration can come from anywhere. Talking to people, reading, watching tv, walking down the street, etc.
SG: Do you have a favorite character that you like to draw?
JR: Sure. Blecky Yuckerella. And Boobs Pooter is fun to draw, as well.
SG: Can you tell us a little about Angry Youth Comix?
JR: It’s a forum for all my humorous comic book ideas.
SG: Can you tell us a little about your website’s New Character Parade.
JR: It’s sort of a similar theme to my previous books THE COMIC BOOK HOLOCAUST and THE KLASSIK KOMIX KLUB. In
those books I would take a comic or piece of literature and draw a comic parody of it as quickly as I could. With NCP I’m not parodying anything really but I invent a new character and try to riff on it in the same vein as the previous books.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
JR: In my various comic books, Nickelodeon Magazine, MAD, VICE…
SG: Where will it be seen next?
JR: Nickelodeon Magazine, MAD, VICE…
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
JR: I’m living the dream.
SG: What is your favorite color?
JR: Who cares? I don’t even think I know. I’ve never really thought about it. Unless your asking because
you want to buy me a negligee or something. In that case, red.
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
JR: Robert Crumb. His work had a big influence on me. His sketchbooks from the late 60s/early 70s are some of
the greatest works of art from the 20th century. Although, I recently heard that he doesn’t like my
comics at all, so he can go fuck himself. Asshole.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
JR: RATS by Robert Sullivan
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
JR: Have I ever painted a self-portrait? No. Have I ever drawn a self-portrait? Lots of times. They’re all over the place.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
JR: In front of my tv.
SG: Any final words of advice?
JR: AWESOME!!!!!!!!
