Spraygraphic Interview with Brion Nuda Rosch
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
BNR: I make art and enjoy time at home with my girlfriend and three cats.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
BNR: San Francisco
SG: What mediums do you work with?
BNR: Found book pages, wood, paper, and recycled dump stock house-paint.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
BNR: Piles of painted paper and wood are found throughout my workspace and most of my work involves a simple act of arranging. These actions change from piece to piece.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
BNR: I step away, and give myself time to reflect on the marks or movements made. Many pieces watch over my workspace for a long period of time before becoming complete and I am comfortable with this pace.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
BNR: This changes day to day. Today it would be the rain.
SG: Can you please tell us a little about your “four portraits”?
BNR: While exploring spatial relationships within my painting, the figure (portrait) often returns as a silhouette and foundation for a landscape to be built upon. Working within the figure as a foundation, fragments of existing abstract marks collage the visual plane mapping a composition of possible unconscious inner thought and necessity for direction. Along the way a celebration is free to exist, as we wear our maps as masks during this rite of passage.
SG: Can you please tell us a little about your Life and War series? Where did the found book pages come from?
BNR: I am seeking to understand my relationship with history and the stories told of life, war, and creation. History has been told through a visual picture, and it is through this visual picture that I have found direction. The found book pages come from history books, and as I collect these books, the series continues.
SG: Can you tell us a little about The Dollar Bill Project. How did you become involved in that show?
BNR: The Dollar Bill Project is an ongoing project / exhibition about the US dollar curated by Liz Walsh. Artists were invited to interrupt the US dollar. These interruptions varied.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
BNR: Allston Skirt Gallery, Eleanor Harwood Gallery, Southern Exposure, Triple Base, Samson Projects, and Adobe Books Backroom Gallery.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
BNR: I have a solo installation in the project space of Allston Skirt in Boston opening late February. Also, a group exhibition at Harolds Arts in Chicago. In March I have a solo project with 301 Bocana Gallery here in San Francisco.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
BNR: A home in the woods with uninterrupted time and space.
SG: What is your favorite color?
BNR: Some of my favorite colors can be found here
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
BNR: A short list, Man Ray, Richard Tuttle, Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, Joan Mitchell, Hundertwasser, Louise Nevelson, Henry Flynt, Gilbert & George, John Baldessari, Fischli & Weiss, Joseph Beuys, David Bohm, Joseph Campbell, James Joyce, National Geographic, Nova, and Carl Jung.
SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?
BNR: I am reading Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth, and have been re-visting James Joyce. My friend just turned me onto Richard Brautigan while visiting Adobe Bookstore.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
BNR: I may have, and I don’t know where.
SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?
BNR: Right now home feels best.
SG: Any final words of advice?
BNR: Enjoy your day.
