On February 1st (First Friday) at First Studio on 631 North First Ave & McKinley in Phoenix at 6pm six artists are having an art show (XXOH) to benefit Free Arts of Arizona. The show is conceived and curated by Andrew James Benson. The six artists are glen allen, casebeer, sentrock, jason rudolph pena, jenny ignaszewski, and josh rhodes. Spraygraphic’s Chuck b. has interviewed the artists and will be sharing these Thought Provoking Interviews throughout the week leading up to the event.

Spraygraphic Interview with casebeer
SG: Please tell us about yourself?
C: Oh dear. I can tell you three things that come to mind while i am framing a piece tonight called, “Lake House, If You Will”: 1) I am terrified of snails. 2) I do not like meat OR vegetables and 3) I once won a Ladmo Bag.
And, well: I’m also a fiction writer. I like making things. I love my people. I XXoh! absurdity and dialogue and the unexpected. I hate war.
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
C: After years of painting in corners, I’m pleased to say I now paint in my Fly double wide garage in Tempe on Hardy (International Highway). My dad always make this joke about it when he visits, “I’ve been using my studio all wrong … I’ve been parking my truck in it.”
SG: What mediums do you work with?
C: Anything will do if it’s right and if it fits. (it has to fit perfectly, like it’s been waiting so many lifetimes just to make it where it does). Acrylic and collage, metal, wood, doll clothes, thrift store stuff, kids books, the scraps of cut-outs that fall on the floor. I recently tore all my old fiction manuscripts and matte medium-ed them onto everything.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
C: I try not to know where I’m going. I have a few pieces in hand. Some questions. I stare a lot. I like turning the canvas upside down and looking for the next step.
SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?
C: Turn it upside down. Check my email. Leave the room. Get another cup of coffee. Talk to Joe. Get back in the room.
SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?
C: The ordinary and extraordinary things people say. Found objects. Conversation. Confusion. Locals. Art trailers on New Years Eve.
SG: Can you tell us a little about your involvement with the XXOH show.
C: An unexpected and amusing pleasure. Andrew Benson, the XXOH! show champion, dreamed it up and called each of us, in kind of the 11th hour. We all met each other for the first time at Andrew’s a few weeks ago. We had some wine and then we started cutting up pictures of ours work and collaging them, this just kind of busted it out, a collage jam–if you will (maybe you won’t)–and for several hours everyone just cut and placed and painted and play-doh-ed on film. I highly recommend it. DO try this at home. Also, we have all been working on a collaborative piece that has made it’s way from studio to studio. These connective moments and literal connections have been a great ride. Much inspiration in all of it. We are having a super good, super absurd time. I thank Andrew for having the eyes and go-go to put us all together.
SG: Can you tell us a little about what people can expect to see at the XXOH show.
C: Heads and airplanes and birds and words and drips and pin curls and cowboys and pants and fish and letters and eyes and red and heartbreaks and paper and wood and sleeping, lovesick giants.
And gorgeous music from Joe Myers, my long-time.
SG: How many pieces will you have in the show?
C: 12-ish.
SG: Do you have any other upcoming projects you would like people to know about?
C: More work at Barrio Cafe (hangs January 29th- End of March).
Currently working in collaboration with artist Beth Tom on painting her studio into a Life Size Fisher Price House. Yellow Roof, flowers, a handle being made. To drive by, Tempe: Off of Spence Avenue, South on Kenneth (University and Rural Area). On the right, you can’t miss it.
May 9th: One woman show, “Tell Me Something”, at the historic Alwun House.
One more project note: working with “This Runs On Blood” puppets for stop motion film. Brothers John and Greg Casebeer +add-on brother Josh+Lots of nights with good supplies. Check out puppets and other haunting stuff: http://www.myspace.com/thisrunsonblood
