Spraygraphic Interview with Lucas Soi

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

LS: We just finished watching “Deadwood”. Holy crap it’s amazing! Does for the western what S. Clay Wilson did for pirates.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

LS: Vancouver, Canada

SG: What mediums do you work with?

LS: Pen and ink with a monochrome palette. My favorite pens are Mont Blanc, Rapidograph, Bic and Papermate on Strathmore Bristol Vellum. Clairefontaine also makes great paper.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

LS: Let’s use “Curse Of The Mummy’s Tomb” (2007) as an example. I drew the two figures on the left page in June, stopped and put it away because I didn’t know how to proceed. Four months later I was doing a drawing of Tutankhamen’s tomb and remembered that page I’d put away. When I put the two pages together I suddenly envisioned the rest of the piece. I drew the third page with the entire composition in mind.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

LS: Stop. There’s no clock to punch.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

LS: This website for perverts that collects the private pictures teenage girls take of one another. You know, the ones where they flash their boobs and pull each other’s pants down and imitate fashion model poses.

SG: Can you please tell us a little about your solo exhibit, Found Alive.

LS: Every drawing exhibition seems the same: four walls plastered with a hundred different drawings. It was my second solo show and I made five drawings that felt like you were looking at a hundred.

SG: Can you please tell us a little about your about your piece, At The Base Of The Crucifixion.

LS: I didn’t draw for three months at the beginning of 2007. I went to Paris, Stockholm and Berlin, then Geneva and Vienna; I ended up staying in Europe for like two months. The “Crucifixion” piece was the first thing I did when I got back. I’m working in the Western art historical tradition and Bible stories are obviously a big part of that. I felt I was ready to do a 21st century version, you know, one that people could relate to today.

SG: Where has your work been seen?

LS: I’ve shown at Colette in Paris, Studio Bee in Tokyo, The Gallery Soho in London, Proyectos Monclova in Mexico City and of course here at home in Vancouver, among other places.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

LS: Los Angeles, and London again thanks to winning my category in the London International Creative Competition.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

LS: When I sit down I never know what I’m gonna draw so there are never any preconceived ideas or assignments. Fuck that!

SG: What is your favorite color?

LS: Green, and pink.

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

LS: If you ask me a hundred times I’ll give you a hundred different answers. But a safe bet is always Tracey Emin. She does the same autobiographical confessional thing that my work is all about.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

LS: I’ve been reading US Weekly lately. I really like the vertical layout and my fav sections are “Who Wore It Best?” and “Stars - They’re Just Like US!”

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

LS: Yeah man, “Autoportrait” (2005). I think it’s going to London, actually. And I’m working on a 2008 version as we speak.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

LS: The forest. Vancouver is a rainforest dude!

SG: Any final words of advice?

LS: Try and make work that doesn’t look like anybody else’s. You can’t go wrong if you’re doing that.
