Spraygraphic Interview with Mulheres Barbadas

SG: Please tell us about yourself?

MB: We’re Gringo and Julio, two big kids who like draw.

SG: Where do you currently live and work?

MB: São Paulo, Brasil. Near the park.

SG: What mediums do you work with?

MB: Mostly photoshop. We’ve been doing a few experiments with inks and glitter though.

SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.

MB: We usually don’t sketch or plan much, we just take turns. Usually one will take the lead and start with a random element, and then the other will add something to the canvas and so on, until we run out of room.

SG: What kind of things do you do when you get blocked or find it hard to create something?

MB: We usually talk between ourselves or just look around, random books, magazines, anything. We’ll also remake something we used in another work in a different way.

SG: Where are you currently finding your inspiration?

MB: Fluffy animals. And some heavy, kinky shit we see online.

SG: Your work tends to use all of the space on the canvas/page. Can you tell us a little about that choice?

MB: It’s what makes it fun, in the final piece and in the way we work. We don’t really draw that well, but when it’s all crammed up and chaotic it looks much sweeter. The stuff we have on our website is in chronological order, and if you look at it in reverse, you’ll notice we started adding more and more stuff into a piece gradually, though not on purpose.

SG: How did you develop a working relationship with MTV? Is it ongoing? Or one-time contract?

MB: It was just that one thing, it’d be cool to do more stuff though. Coca-Cola had to approve the piece as well, and they we’re whiny little bitches, but gave in in the end, and we got to print the final version it like we (and MTV) wanted it to be.

SG: Can you tell us a little about your super cool shoe design. Where can one get a pair?

MB: We’re experimenting, and kinda failed… the fabric pen we used sucked, so it took too long to make the shoe and we’re not 100% happy. We only have that one pair, we’ll try again soon though!

SG: Where has your work been seen?

MB: We’ve been doing mostly stuff for magazines, it’s cool how they come from everywhere… so far I think: Chile, Spain, US, England, Australia, China and Brazil.

SG: Where will it be seen next?

MB: We just did something for faesthetic, and got a couple more projects coming up. We’re doing a couple shirts as well, but still in the planning. We wanna make a skateboard, and more shoes. And one of those wallets that you can’t get your cards out of it because the plastic is sticky.

SG: What is your dream art assignment?

MB: It’d be awesome to travel somewhere new… it’d be though with our day jobs and all, but awesome.

SG: What is your favorite color?

MB: Purple and brown!

SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?

MB: Gringo is a Jim Woodring fan. It looks cute and silly somehow at first glance but it’s so bizarre and complex, it’s awesome.

SG: What book/magazine are you reading this week?

MB: The Handjob book by Michael Perry just arrived in the mail, and it’s great.

SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?

MB: Not together, no. I guess we’d just draw a bunch of body hair and stuff.

SG: Where is your favorite place to hang out?

MB: I wouldn’t say “hang out” but there’s a japanese restaurant we go to every chance we have. We went today, we’re going tomorrow.

SG: Any final words of advice?

MB: Don’t hit send before finishing all the answers in the interview, you’ll feel silly. Also, drink water and pee a lot.
