Spraygraphic Interview with Angela Cappetta
SG: Where do you currently live and work?
AC: New York City etc.
SG: What mediums do you work with?
AC: Film.
SG: What kind of equipment do you use?
AC: I largely use a succession of Leicas and 6×9’s. I absolutely love the rectangle.
SG: Describe your working process when creating a new work.
AC: I try to shoot four days per week. If I don’t then I’m left thirsting for more.
SG: What kinds of subjects do you like to photograph the most?
AC: It varies on my mood. Lately I’m in love with landscape.
SG: What kind of models do you like to work with them most? The least?
AC: A model is whomever happens to be in front of my lens. In that moment, they are my favorite model.
SG: Why did you choose the name Medusa on your website to describe that collection of photos?
AC: It’s the name of the hamlet in upstate New York where these pictures are made.
SG: What’s your studio like?
AC: It’s a darkroom, so suffice it to say it’s very dark.
SG: Where has your work been seen?
AC: Among collections that have acquired my work are, The Corcoran, The New York Public Library and The Center for Photography at Woodstock.
SG: Where will it be seen next?
AC: The Library of Congress is in the process of acquiring some prints of mine. Stay tuned for more on that.
SG: What is your dream art assignment?
AC: There’s no such thing. My dream is to work and do fine work.
SG: What is your favorite color?
AC: Lately I’m a fan of butter yellow.
SG: Who is your favorite artist? And Why?
AC: Hands down Lee Friedlander because he never makes excuses. All he does is work. His brain must be on some kind of mystical auto pilot. What I wouldn’t give for that.
SG: What book/magazine are reading this week?
AC: Currently I am reading the transcripts to the Lizzie Borden trial. It’s called Goodbye Lizzie Borden and it’s by a trial lawyer named Robert Sullivan. It was written in 1970. Concurrently I am reading William Carlos Williams‘ complete works. His poetry has heavily had an effect on my Medusa project since I began photographing upstate about a decade ago.
SG: Ever do a self portrait? Where is it now?
AC: Tons and all over my contact sheets. I’ll eventually do something with them. But not now.
SG: So let’s end with your favorite place to hang out?
AC: I “hang out” in the countryside, where I can be spotted lurking in nicely lit fields on any given day.
