Spraygraphic Interview for B Royalty:
Sb: Tell us a little about yourself.
broyalty: I’m mad hot and talented. i practice my violin a lot. i have 2 daughters and 4 dogs.
Sb: Where do you currently live and work?
broyalty: I’ve lived in Tempe, Arizona for 20 years. I have a house in what we like to call the “rail district”, between the tracks just north of Broadway Road and the new light rail tracks on Apache Blvd.
Sb: What mediums do you work with?
broyalty: I work mostly with oil paint and collage, but also right now i am making a movie and playing my violin.
Sb: Describe your working process when creating a new work?
broyalty: hmmm… i spend a lot of time thinking. and looking. i listen to a lot of music. other than that, i just try to be as honest and transparent as possible.
Sb: What’s your Studio like?
broyalty: it’s a little old house even nearer to the tracks. it’s scheduled to be torn down soon to make way for eight 3-story $350,000 condos.
Sb: What are some of your inspirations influencing your work?
broyalty: Everything…especially music. Influencing my work is: growing up in Cincinnati, Fisher-Price toys, typography, studying design and color with Rob Roy Kelly (a student of Josef Albers); the visual work of Paul Rand, Romare Bearden, Ben Shahn, Egon Schiele, Aaron Siskind, Alexander Calder, the Bauhaus, Jean-Michel Basquiat; the writing of Rumi, E. B. White, A. A. Milne, Mary Oliver, e. e. cummings; and the music of Mendelssohn, Me�shell Ndegeocello, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Sufjan Stevens, Aaron Copeland, DJ Shadow, Ben Folds, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Mos Def, Nina Simone, Outkast, Over the Rhine, Kenny Werner and Prince.
Sb: Where has your work been seen?
broyalty: Phoenix, New York, LA, Cincinnati and other places. Also, in Dwell magazine.
Sb: Where will it be seen next?
broyalty: i don’t know.
Sb: What is your dream art assignment?
broyalty: i don’t do assignments.
Sb: What’s your favorite color?
broyalty: No color looks good alone.
Sb: What book/magazines are you reading this week?
broyalty: I’m reading “Effortless Mastery”, by Kenny Werner, The Sun magazine, a biography of Mendelssohn, everything by Malcolm Gladwell.
Sb: Ever do self portrait?
broaylty: Done several.
Sb: Where is it now?
broyalty: Don’t know.
